It’s easy to be disheartened when some environmental battles seem to go on forever, often at a one-step-forward, two-steps-back pace. The current effort to limit global warming is a great example.

Just a year after the jubilance of the Paris Climate Climate agreement, it all seemed to fall apart again.The U.S. election shook the global climate effort to its core and seemed to spur what felt like a strengthening global anti-science movement — an “endarkenment,” as it’s been called, perhaps the last stand of the industrial fossil fuel oligarchy that has more or less had its way for the past 100 years.

But a little closer look at recent environmental history tells a happier story. In places where people and communities work together and respect to each other, where they listen to each other, to their hearts and conscience, we see progress. The ongoing effort to restore and protect Mono Lake and its tributaries is a great example.

Last autumn, we talked to several people who have dedicated thousands of hours and more to that effort, in some cases, entire careers. In other cases, that sense of connection to place, and the passion to preserve it, are being passed down through generations.

We visited bird-nesting areas and hiked with restoration ecologists along freshwater streams. where ecosystems are springing back to life in a riot of biodiversity, after being disrupted and nearly killed by water diversions in the 1940s.

In the 1970s, people realized how much was at stake. They banded together and rose up. They formed the Mono Lake Committee, with thousands of members. They insisted on protection, showed how that can be done without hurting people and then set out to spread that message to as many people as would listen. By the early 1980s, the legal system saw it similarly. A California Supreme Court ruling set the framework for institutional protections that were finalized 10 years later.

Don’t give up

Persistence pays off. I was a Mono Lake Committee intern in the mid-1980s, scrambling for preservation day by day, counting fish in the newly rewatered streams to make sure courts wouldn’t allow the diversion dams to be raised again.That’s when I first met Janet Carle, the central voice in our video, and her husband, Dave Carle.The couple spent nearly their entire working life as state park rangers around Mono Lake, advocating for its protection and reaching thousands of people.

More than 30 years later, the Mono Basin ecosystem is persisting. The feeder streams are carving new channels and depositing sediments along the lakeshore. Big spring runoff flows re-adjusting the very shape of the land on a daily basis, as mountain water seeks a path through the high desert.

The lake itself is a giant round mirror of slippery, fecund brine. The water supports an ecosystem of algae, insects and shrimp that, gallon for gallon, is more productive than the ocean. It’s a biological soup that feeds millions of birds, including species that make extreme flights as they connect two hemispheres, migrating from the Arctic to South America.

There are not a lot of places that can replace Mono Lake as a refueling stop on this global avian highway, so if it dies, it will affect the global web of life nearly from pole to pole.

Mono Lake is still threatened, especially by global warming, but it was able to survive through California’s most extreme recorded drought during the mid-2010s. Without the mandated lake level and stream flow rules, Mono Lake most likely would have died during that hot drought. In between came a few years of extreme snow and rain, which challenges the sustainability of the ecosystem in different ways.

The preservation effort has buffered some of the impacts, but the worst may be yet to come. Climate science tells us that extreme droughts lasting decades are not all that rare in the West, especially during times of rapid climate change. That means that the protections plans will have to be updated to reflect the realities of a new climate.

Human-caused global warming will be the next big test for Mono Lake, and we already know what human-caused drought can do to the Mono Basin, as Janet Carle says in the video. We all need to care.

Geteilte Zeit

Die aus 2 Videos bestehende Installation wurde anlässlich der Ausstellung „Normalzeit“ produziert. Die thematische Vorgabe zu dieser Ausstellung war eine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der Wiener Würfeluhr.

Beide Videos wurden mit erhöhten Kamerastandpunkt, aus einem Zimmer des Hotel Kummers, mit Blick auf die Kreuzung Mariahilferstraße/ Neubaugasse, einem Standort einer Würfeluhr, gedreht. 

Kamera 1 ist auf die Uhr gerichtet und macht 1 Foto pro Minute für 48 Stunden, und dokumentiert damit jeden Wechsel der Minutenzeiger. Kamera 2 ist auf den gesamten Kreuzungsbereich gerichtet und fotografiert in Bildintervallen von 12 Sekunden tagsüber und bis zu 36 Sekunden in den Nachtphasen.

Video 1, WienZeit, 48:00 Minuten:

Die Einzelbilder des fotografierten Materials werden auf die Dauer von 6 Sekunden gedehnt und dann mit 3 Sekunden überlappend als Film rausgespielt. In einem weiteren Arbeitsschritt wurde die Uhr freigestellt und auf 24 verschiedene Spuren kopiert und die Dauer des Ausgangsmaterials zeitlich gedehnt oder komprimiert. Die Anordnung der nunmehr 24 Uhren Objekte folgte dann der Grundform des Uhrenkorpus, und imitiert  eine räumliche Struktur, die sich über die gesamte Bildfläche ausbreitet. Durch die Mehrfachanordnung der Uhr mit unterschiedlichen Zeitanzeigen relativiert sich ein mathematisch, chronischer Zugang zum Zeitbegriff. Die unterschiedliche Zeitlichkeit der montierten Spuren lässt sich unmittelbarer über die Änderung der Lichtverhältnisse ablesen. 

Video 2, Bundesländerplatz, 15:16 Minuten

Kamera 2 ist auf den gesamten Kreuzungsbereich gerichtet und fotografiert in Bildintervallen von 12 Sekunden tagsüber und bis zu 36 Sekunden in den Nachtphasen. 23.460 Bilder wurden dann mit einer eigens erstellen Bildbearbeitungssoftware aneinandergereiht und bearbeitet. Die zugrundeliegende Idee der Software war eine Simulation eines fotografischen Stilmittels, die Langzeitbelichtung. Auf den frühen Fotografien und Daguerreotypien waren aufgrund der extrem langen Belichtungszeiten von Straßenszenerien kaum Menschen zu sehen, weil diese nicht lange genug am Platz verharrten, um von der Kamera erfasst zu werden. Diese Tatsache ist nur der Fotografie zu eigen, und nicht dem Film, weil die Abbildungsmechanismen von Zeit in den beiden Medien unterschiedlich sind. Die Fotografie „fixiert einen bestimmten Zeitabschnitt auf ein Bild, der Film hält den selben Zeitabschnitt mit mehreren hunderten, oder sogar tausenden Einzelbildern fest, die dann nacheinander gezeigt werden. Mit dem vorliegenden Film wollte ich jedoch dieses chronische nacheinander von fotografischen Momenten unterlaufen und den Versuch starten Zeit als Dauer darzustellen.

In der für die artSCREENS modifizierten Videoarbeit “Light, Shadow, Moving and Still“ sind wechselnde Einblicke in eine Wohnung zu sehen. In einer langsamen Bildfolge zeigt der Kamera-Blick  verschiedene Räume, fokussiert Details, verliert sich im Dunkel der Nacht. Die Hauptakteure in Strohmaiers Video sind tanzende Schatten und wandernde Lichtreflexe die aufgrund von Montage, Dehnungs und -Komprimierungsverfahren das Szenario in einen widersprüchlichen Zustand zwischen Stillstand und Bewegung rücken.

Die Künstlerin führt uns mit dieser Arbeit Zeit als technologisches Konstrukt vor. In unserer medialisierten Gesellschaft der allzeitigen Verfügbarkeit, sucht das Individuum Bestätigung in einer umgreifenden Wahrnehmung zu finden. Strohmaier widersetzt sich jedoch konsequent einer Allgegenwart der Beschleunigung. Sie begibt sich mit einer nahezu anachronistisch anmutenden Beharrlichkeit, auf eine Spurensuche des Nebensächlichen, und läßt dabei in aufmerksamer Gelassenheit einfach den Tag verstreichen. 

The 4 screen video installation „Light, Shadow, Moving and Still“ shows changing views of an appartement. A static camera watches the space from different angels and viewpoints or focusses on details. The  main characters in Strohmaiers videos are moving light reflexions and dancing shadows. The changing daylight frames and shapes the scenery till it dissolves into the darkness of the night. Strohmaiers video is set in a contradictionary state between movement and standstill due to montage, elongation and compression operations.With this work the artist introduces time as a technological construction. In a media dominated society of perpetual availability the individual is seeking for an embracing cognition. But as opposed to the allencompassing acceleration of ourdays lifes, Strohmaier, with a highly concentrated calmness, is tracing the paths of the marginal and just lets the days pass bye.

Gefilmt wurden die teilweise spektakulären Flugbahnen von Schwalben, die zur Fütterung ihrer Jungen ein Vordach  oftmals anflogen. Durch die Schnelligkeit der Flugmanöver war es trotz höchster Konzentration nicht zu schaffen einen einzelnen Vogel zu folgen. Eigentlich war es überhaupt nur möglich die Szenerie zu erfassen, wenn man aus dem „Augenwinkel“, die Veränderungen und Bewegungen registrierte, ein völlig unfokusiertes „schauen“ anstatt des erkennenden „sehens“ praktizierte.

Die Montage von 7 verschiedenen Kameraeinstellungen zu einem Doppelbild führt einen Multiperspektivischen Raum ein. Die einzelnen Clips wurden in verschiedenem Ausmaß zeitlich gedehnt.

In der Videoarbeit „getting closer, almost there“ wird eine Autobahnfahrt dokumentiert. Die 3 Blickachsen sind panoramatisch angeordnet und zeigen sowohl den Fahrer und Beifahrer, als auch die vorbeiziehende Landschaft.

Die über Einzelbilder hergestellte Bewegungssequenzen sind in verschiedenen Tempos geschnitten und verweben die Zeit und Blickachsen zu einer poetischen Momentaufnahme, was durch den kontemplativen Soundtrack unterstrichen wird.

Die Stapelartig montierten Einzelbilder werden im Laufe der Videosequenz von oben nach unten „abgearbeitet“. Durch die Gleichförmigkeit der Landschaft, die Ähnlichkeit der vorbeifahrenden Autos wird die Geschwindigkeit der Fahrt in eine eigentümliche Zeitlichkeit gerückt. Der gestaffelt dargestellte Raum oszilliert zwischen Bewegung und Stillstand.

Die Beschreibung dieser Fahrt wird zur Atmosphäre und über die Montage zu einer Spurensuche nach Vergänglichkeit und dem Moment. Der Weg ist das Ziel.

This video documents a drive on a highway from the perspective of the rear seat. The 3 view axis are arranged in a panorama view. One scenery shows the driver , the second shows the highway, the third gaze watches the fellow passenger.

The 3 moving sequences were arranged in photoshop and then rendered to a film in which each part has a different timing. Time and viewing axes are thus woven together into a poetic moment, underlined by a repetitive soundtrack.

The single shots are arranged in photoshop layers as if they were lying on each other and the movement is created by dissolving one after the other.

The uniformity of the landscape and the similarity of the passing cars creates a unique feeling of motion. The staggered depiction of space oscillates between movement and standing still.

The description of this drive becomes atmosphere and is meant as a reflection of the transience and momentariness of perception.

Die beiden Videoprojektionen Jetzt / Immer der Künstlerin Jutta Strohmaier laden die Ausstellungsbesucher auf eine suggestive Reise ein. Die gezeigten Videobilder referieren auf Bäume, Natur, Blattwerk – eine Fahrt durch eine Allee. Das dargestellte Szenario wird jedoch nur angedeutet. Die Künstlerin hat sich darauf beschränkt das Spiel von Licht und Schatten auf ihrem Weg einzufangen. Die wechselnden Lichtverhältnisse der montierten Aufnahmen führen eine Rhythmisierung des Raumes ein, der sich als Gewebe von Schattenstrukturen darstellt. Der Gleichzeitigkeit und Überblendung von unterschiedlichen Blickachsen in der zentralen ersten Videosequenz steht im zweiten Video eine Fahrt gegenüber, in der sich das Bild fortwährend entzieht. Die Mehrdeutigkeit zwischen Bild und Abbild, Objekt und Schatten, Fläche und Raum, Bewegung und Stillstand wird dabei durch eine collagenartige Toninstallation unterstrichen. 

Strohmaier begibt sich in ihrer Arbeit auf die Suche nach der Qualität des Augenblicks. Durch die Überlagerung und Transformation von räumlichen und zeitlichen Parametern wird eine Ästhetik der Bewegung und Veränderung eingeführt. Die Anordnung der Projektionen in Verbindung mit der Soundinstallation dokumentieren das Erleben einer räumlichen Erfahrung. Der ursprüngliche Ereignisraum steht dabei jedoch nicht im Vordergrund. Die Künstlerin schafft mit poetischen Mitteln eine Verbindung zwischen äußerem Erleben und möglichen Innenwelten/ Erinnerungen.

Now/ Always

is a video and sound installation with 2 projection screens and a 4 channel surround soundtrack. It is an invitation to a suggestive journey. The two video screens refer to trees, nature, foliage – a trip along an treelined street. But the whole scenery is just to be seen as adumbration. I limited myself to catching only the play of lights and shadows on my path. The changing light situations invent a rhythmical space that is formed as a netting of shadow structures.

For the first video I walked down the street and shot different perspectives of the shadow structures and the moving leaves with a fixed camera. These different viewing angels were than animated in a movie. The second projection shows a ride along exactly the same treelined street. The camera was fixed on a bicycle and filmed the passing ground.  

The ambiguousness of image and picture, object and shadow, surface and space, movement and standstill is underlined by a collage-like sound installation. With this work I go on a search for the quality of a moment. Through transformation and overlapping of spatial and chronological parameters I try to invent an aesthetic of movement and change, seeking a space of memory, the floating sense of childhood.
